Vision of Hope . . .and God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work . . . 2 Corinthians 9:8 Our three-year Vision of Hope initiative has been a blessing in so many ways. We have had opportunity to learn, grow and share needs, hopes and prayers. To date we have $367,832 in pledges, which is continuing to grow to-ward our goal of $750,000; and $35,700 in commitments and gifts re-ceived as of March 15th (gifts of nearly $8,000 in one month). Thank you for your continued prayers and support. Together we keep the Vision of Hope alive. Your Vision of Hope Team, Milo Bailey, Jeanne Gerstle, Tom Heindl, Cindy Johnson, Tracy Moffatt, Bill Nolan, Joyce Stearns, Pr. Gary LaCroix
REFLECTIONS … On the Past (What ‘Was’) and On the Future (What ‘Shall BE’!) Little did I realize that the words I had written for the last "Cross Notes" – "As the Epiphany season, marked by Gos-pel stories of God at-work in the life and ministry of Jesus, gives way to Lent and our journey to Jerusalem, "Who" are some of the people that have revealed God’s goodness to you? – would prove so insightful for me over these past 3+ weeks! AND the ancient word of promise from God to Moses, God answering Moses’ question, "What is your name?" with the response "YHWH" – "I AM" (also translated, "I WILL BE"). "Tell them ‘I AM’ sent you." Br. Martin spoke of the need for all the baptized "to BE" "Christs" one-to-another – that as God has blessed us in so many ways, especially in the gift of Jesus the Christ, our Lord and Savior, our response is "to BE" "Christs" revealing God’s LOVE in our words and actions. "Who" are some of the people that have revealed God’s goodness to me? They are numerous! – And their names include Dr. Tomas Carrasquillo (my surgeon, for last year’s hernia repair; week’s earlier Christine’s gall bladder surgery), Dr. Mar-shall D’Souza (my internist), the RNs – Susan, Sara, Nancy, Sarah (among the many); the LPNs – Blanca, Del, Ruthsa; food service, housekeeping, CCH’s volunteers! But most of all, YOU! – my baptized sisters-and-brothers in Christ!! Your cards, along with the words of encouragement and kindness AND your prayers have filled us with HOPE! Over the years God has blessed us with numerous co-workers in the ministry we’ve shared through the congregations I’ve served as Pastor, friendshipS which have continued over the years. Yet it is in these present moments that God’s LOVE has been magnified through YOU, and for that we con-sider ourselves "to BE" richly ‘blessed’! It is my hope, along with Dr. Carrasquillo’s approval, to return to CLC and proclaim the "Good News" on Easter 3, Sunday 18 April. If the healing continues, which I’m confident it will, I’ll return to CCH in mid-June for the additional surgery of reversing the colostomy with 5-7 days of hospitalization and another 6 weeks of re-covery. And for the incredible support of the CLC ministry staff and our Council lead-ership, I’m especially grateful! These past weeks have been marked by long periods of silence, and prayer, and much reading – all of which I’m most grateful. And from that reading, I share some words of my favorite author, Frederick Buechner, this from his book, Whistling in the Dark: An ABC Theologized – on FRIENDS: "‘You are my friends,’ Jesus says, ‘if you do what I command you.’ The com-mand, of course, is ‘to love one another,’ as he puts it. To be his friends, that is to say, we have to be each other’s friends, conceivably even lay down our lives for each other. You never know (John 15.12-15). It is a high price to pay, and Jesus does not pretend otherwise, but the implication is that it’s worth every cent." With THANK-full-ness for what yet shall "BE!" – By the GRACE of God! Pastor Gary – and Christine! - LaCroix
Council Notes This is a time of change and challenge for the Church Council. With the recent Congregational election and three appointments to fulfill unex-pired terms, 50 % of the Council membership is new and is bringing a refreshing and optimistic vision for the Church’s future. With the reces-sion the community has been experiencing, our challenges continue to grow. As was once said by a past statesman, when the going gets tough, the tough get going.‖ So now is the time to get going and to institute change at Christ Lutheran Ministries. Notice the words Christ Lutheran Ministries. This includes Christ Lutheran Church, Christ Lu-theran School, and Special Angels Early Learning Center. We are one campus, one ministry team, serving Christ. On April 11th at 10:20, we will convene for a very important Congregational meeting. At that meeting we will be discussing this year’s budget along with some changes that are necessitated to the Constitution and Bylaws. It is most important that you come to that meeting and talk to our Congregational leadership. The Stewardship and Vision of Hope Committees have been attentively following up on their programs. The future of Christ Lutheran Ministries is very much relying on the success of these two endeavors. If you have not responded to these programs, and are able to do so, we ask that you prayerfully consider your involvement in them. The school continues to hold its own, even in these difficult times. God has provided us the gift of excellent administrators and educators that place the well being and future of our students well above what is nor-mally experienced today. The recent Odyssey of the Mind competition showcased just how well our students are challenged and responding. Special Angels has been combined under the same great administrative leadership as the school, and has a future that continues to look positive. A final note. Many parishioners feel the need to know more about Christ Lutheran Ministries. The Council door is ALWAYS open. Each of us has our home phone numbers posted in the bulletin, and those numbers are readily available from the Church office. Please call us with your concerns. We want Christ Lutheran Ministries to be an open book and stand ready to assist you in any manner we can. Please call us with your thoughts. God Bless! Bill Nolan, Council President
Celebrating in Worship and Music! This certainly is a busy time for worship and music at CLC. The season of Lent is almost over and the wonderful celebration of Easter is upon us and we urge you to take every opportunity to Worship often. The Music Minis-try at CLC will present their annual Spring Fling Concert on April the 18th at 3 pm in the sanctuary with the Chancel Choir, Praise, Harmony, New Beginnings, Instrumental-ists and soloists. There will be fellowship after the concert in Hafer Hall. The offering taken during the concert will go to a good cause as always and please remember we need all your support by attending this great event. The department is also planning a mini cantata in December and will be looking for some outside assistance in the acting department. Don't be shy as we need all who can help. We hope you enjoyed the Holden’s Evening Prayer during the evening Lenten services. It has such great meaning and the group loves doing the work. Easter Sunday will be a great day of celebration with great music, wonderful messages and great fellowship. A lot of work goes into the planning of these services and we all love every second of the preparation. As always all departments in the Music Ministry are always looking for more participation and all are welcome. Just carry a tune and put your heart into it and we will have a great time. Glory To God! God Bless and we look forward to seeing you at all the great things happening at CLC. Jim Jeffery Worship and Music Coordinator and Organist Christ Lutheran Ministries
Women of the ELCA are 200,000 strong throughout the United States. They may be found in large congregations, in small congregations, in Christ Lutheran Church, Cape Coral. Women are making a difference in people’s lives by growing in faith, supporting one another, affirming their gifts, and engaging in mission and action. We have 7 circles here at Christ Lutheran. For further information pick up a WELCA booklet in the church office or call Peggy Eggeling at 337-2691. Recent happenings: On February 28 a bake sale was held in connection with Bold Women’s Sunday. $382 was received to buy bricks to assist in building a community center and center for worship in Haiti. On March 20 the annual Calossa Conference Women of the ELCA Spring gathering was held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Naples. Eleven women (including 3 guests) attending the gathering from Christ Lutheran. A most uplifting day on the first day of Spring ---new friends, old friends, inspiration, scrumptious food, fellowship, Bible study and a visit from Katie Luther!! Coming soon: April 24 at 12 noon the annual Spring Luncheon will be held in Hafer Hall with a Mardi Gras theme. ALL women of the congregation are invited to attend. Bring your signature salad for the salad luncheon. Bread and desserts will be provided. There will be time for reflection, fellowship and fun. May 8 and 9 Rachel’s Day will be celebrated at all 3 services. Rachel’s Day is a reminder of Rachel in Jeremiah 3, mourning the loss of her children. Women of the ELCA reflect on this Biblical truth as we reflect on women and children today in crisis situations. Worship leaders will be women.
From Pastor Frank: Please bear with me in this long, but hopefully, no-frills article!! 1. We continue to extend our prayers to Pr. LaCroix. His surgery was successful and, after a period of rest and recovery should be back to his ministry in good health. 2. Our observation/celebration of Holy Week and Easter: this is a time when we think about the depths and lengths to which God will go to save us and the heights to which God through Jesus Christ will take us. Our schedule of worship is as follows: Passion/Palm Sunday March 27/28 Saturday 5:30, Sunday 9:15, 9:30 (New Beginnings) and 11 am Holy Thursday April 1 — Noon and 7 pm Good Friday April 2 — Noon and 7 pm Festival of Easter 7:30, 9:15, 9:30 (New Beginnings) and 11 am ** Please note there will be no services on Saturday evening. 3. In Pr. LaCroix absence/time of recovery, I am serving as best I can! I conduct worship and preach, do some of the hospital visitation, conduct special services (memorials, etc.) and attend only essential meetings. The staff and I meet weekly to assess the needs and determine our di-rections and responsibilities for the following week. Thanks to the staff for ―stepping up‖ and for some of you for stepping in!! Special thanks to Nancy Roberts, Parish Nurse, for setting up a hospital visitation schedule for lay visitors and please forgive us if all of us are less than perfect! ** As we noted above there will be no Easter Vigil this year. This is a service dear to the hearts of the LaCroix’ , which I am sure will be resumed next year. Thanks for un-derstanding! 4. April 25 will be my last Sunday as a member of the CLC staff. I had announced this to the Church Council last Fall. Contrary to some rumors (from several sources) we are not moving out of the area and will still be around to do occasional services and classes as invited to do so. Please know that you have made my retirement busy, exciting, and meaningful!! Lois and I will see you around. God Bless!! Thanks!! Pr. Frank
No Longer Homeless Through CCMI’s help, Tim, the former homeless man who spoke to Prime Timers is happily em-ployed. He is living on a farmer’s property caring for several horses. Tim is living in a 5th Wheeler on the property. He has been paying $50 a week and will pay his loan off this month. From his first paycheck he sent a check to CCMI to thank them for the help they gave him. Nona Gronau Octoberfest MarchOctoberfest in March I simply say "Vielen, herzlichen Dank" It translates as "Much/many heartfelt thank(s)". to all of the volunteers that continue to step up and assist with this outreach. This year brought many challenges. Each of you faced these hurdles with determination and for some of you that meant wet feet. Don’s original vision for this event was simple. Bring happy polka music to this area and return all of the profits back to the community. The great thing about this event is that it does that and much more. Each of you should be proud of your service and how you have elevated this event over the years. A good many of the participants are from out of this area. Some of these Polka fans travel throughout the country going to such festivals. Most will agree that this event rivals some of the biggest and best festivals in the country. This would not be possible without you and the members of our community that assisted us. I’m sure that church leadership will be sharing with all of us the final figures once they have been calculated. Meanwhile be proud of the service you provided your community. As I write this, I have been listening to Pastor Popp’s Sunday message under the tent. How blessed we are to have this man as part of our spiritual team. I leave you with his final words on Sunday. "Celebrate Live, but be thankful for what you have, never forgetting that love, that is higher than all human understanding". Kevin Ostrowsky
Men (& Women) in Mission Breakfasts Men in Mission is a church group that meets the first Thursday of every month, September through May (there are no breakfasts the months of June through August). The meetings commence at 7:15 am, include a great breakfast prepared by a couple of excellent church member volun-teer cooks, and generally host a guest speaker. Speakers are normally key figures within the community at large. The April 1st speaker will be Mr. Mike Quaintance, President of the Cape Coral Chamber of Com-merce. Membership has been expanded to welcome all women who wish to attend. One of the purposes of Men in Mission is to raise funds for specific projects at the Church. Past projects have included, among others, building the bus garage, Church sign on Del Prado Blvd., installation of the lights on the bell tower, and most recently, raising money for a pickup truck for the Church campus. Thanks to a very generous donation by Ed Smith, we have accomplished our goal of purchasing the pickup truck. As you read this, we are saving money to purchase a mobile scissors jack for the church that will eliminate the need to rent one. A scissors jack is required to service the ceiling lights in the rectory and Hafer Hall. A garage sale is scheduled for November 20th to assist in facilitating this purchase. The food is excellent, the fellowship great and the projects worthwhile. Join us for a breakfast and see.
The Blood Mobile is coming to Christ Lutheran! Give the gift of life, if you are able please donate blood on the following dates: June 6th August 1st September 26th The Big Red Bus pulls into the parking lot in front of the Sanc-tuary. You can’t miss it!
Youth News I want to start off by saying thank you to all the youth and par-ents that volunteered at Octoberfest in March this year, we had a great time! Around 15 of our high school youth participated in the senior high lock-in last month, we spent the evening doing our version of the Olympics, bowling and eating pizza. What a great time we truly had. As we look ahead to April and May there are many things to do and prepare for before the summer. Confirmation will resume again on Saturday, April 10th at 5pm in conference room A. Sat-urday Night Live is still going strong as we head into the home stretch before summer. Mark your calendars for April 17th, we are going to be having a youth house clean-up day. The house is in need of much clean-ing inside and out. Many youth and parents will be needed for this big task so start thinking early. Information about summer camp for youth in grades 3-12 went out about a month ago, if you have not gotten this info please find me and I will get it to you. The deadline for registrations will be May 1st . I am also looking for chaperons for this sum-mer, if you are interested please contact me. God Bless and thanks! We remain so grateful to God and to this work of Christ Lutheran Ministries. Our team is often encouraging one another with words like consistency, enthusi-asm, energy and love. New Begin-nings is truly coming to life and be-coming the vision God first placed in our hearts. And now it is time for the watering and the tending to start. Be-yond the generosity of your faithful financial support, we want to encourage everyone here at Christ Lutheran Church to keep this ministry in your prayers. We know that as we come together be-fore our Father He is faithful and sure to continue His work here and we rejoice in His pleasure. Easter is upon us! He is risen! He lives and rules and reigns now and forever! Now more than ever we feel a part of His Kingdom as ambassadors. This past March we took our ministry to the road and held service at the Celebration Cape Coral festival. Kevin O. and Bob, and all those who helped did a fantastic job! Again in March, services were held at the Shell Factory for our annual Oktoberfest in March‖. And now it appears it may be possible to have New Beginnings do services for even more local outdoor venues. Thanks to everyone who has had a part in bringing us to-gether with these opportunities. It is an honor to be part of the ful-fillment of our mission statement Sharing the Love of Christ, in such a big way. Remember as always, we hope everyone will take a Sunday here and there to come join us and experience just how precious God’s love has been for us. Diligent in our hope, faithful in our prayers, patiently doing the work God has called us to… Together in Christ we can do anything! Together, In His Service We Need You! Volunteer Sunday School Director Vacation Bible School Director / Co-Directors There are many service and ministry opportunities available at and through CLC. Ministry Descriptions are available at the bulletin board in the narthex or in the church office. Ministry De-scriptions include a description of the role, time commitment, and support. Please prayerfully consider these ministry positions, and if you, or some one you know, is called to serve in one of them. Please also keep our children and our young families in your prayers. The Potato Team is sorry to report - we will not be hosting a Potato or Produce Drop this year The cold winter weather has caused much crop damage and delayed farmer’s from planting spring crops in both the Carolina’s and Florida. The Society of St. Andrew is already facing a severe shortage of excess food to glean. Citrus groves in northern Florida which typically yield fruit until mid-May are already depleted. They have con-cerns that if we are unable to find a Caro-lina farmer to donate potatoes, there will be no backup food available from the packing houses in Immokalee as it was last year. Based on this, the decision has been made to take a year off from hosting a po-tato drop. We are already on the books for potatoes in 2011. All agencies who have received donations in the past will be con-tacted and informed of our plans. Thanks you for your support of this great project - be ready for 2011! Tracy Moffatt, aka Mrs. Potato Head Stories to Tell, Gifts to Share Dear Friends, How has God touched your life lately? How have you seen God present in the life of others? Do you have a story to share? As a continuation of our theme Stories to Tell & Gifts to Share, we invite you to continue sharing and writing your stories from your life. We also invite you to continue to turn in your time and talent cards along with your faith commitment cards. This is a way we can con-tinue to be grateful and graceful. We will continue to collect stories, time and talent, and commit-ment cards for our congregational story album and planning for Gods will. Simply send or bring your stories to the church office with the title, A Story to Tell or place them in the church offering plate. These new stories and commitments will be collected and will be a valuable legacy of the times in our life together. We invite you to experience how the stories of others can continue to touch your life. Again, we invite you to continue telling and writing stories, and turning in your time and talent along with your commitment cards. May your gift of storytelling and giving be a blessing to you and others! Sharing Christ love, Your Stewardship Team

EDUCATIONAL MINISTRIES Christ Lutheran School (CLS) Special Angels Early Learning Center (SAELC) CLS students celebrated Lutheran Schools Week with a variety of daily activities. Hat Day, Slipper Day, Dress Up Day, Movie Day and Western Day were very special as were the Bible lessons of the week. The 4th and 5th grade K-Kids worked very hard to sell shamrocks to help children with MDA. They were able to raise over $600.00! We thank everyone who helped them. Thanks to Mrs. Zornow who took the time to hang all those many shamrocks down our hallway. In recognition of their efforts, all students were allowed to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day...even their hair! Don’t forget to support the Chili Cook-Off on March 29th. There will be lots of good food and even better fellowship. We thank all the volunteers who painted the lobby and lunchroom in the Special Angels building. Everything looks bright and clean. The staff is sporting new uniform shirts and they look like the professionals they are! We continue to educate and nurture our youngest members. May we all have a blessed Easter and may the Lord help us to walk each day in the vic-tory of His resurrection! Iris Mitchell
Christ Lutheran School P.T.C.O. (Parent, Teacher, Congregation Organization) Thank you to everyone who continues to support our fundraising events. This year we have held a successful Yard sale that profited $2,950. The Cake Walk profited $2,270. Miscellaneous other fundraisers raised another $855. Our March 28th Chili Cook-Off results have not yet been tabulated. None of these would have been successful without the support of the parents, teachers, congregation & staff of Christ Lutheran Ministries. God is Calling Us to Assist our Brothers & Sisters in Haiti "You know, God is quite good to us in spite of it all." These are the words of Pas-tor Joseph Livenson Lauvanus when talking about recent events in Haiti. Even when things are looking the most desperate, we can see God’s hand. In the af-termath of the horrible destruction of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake, we are forced to rely on these words even more. We need to de-pend on God. We need to listen to his guidance, knowing that he will lead us. So often we want to depend on our own intelligence, or determination, but truly in this case we must be patient, do what God calls us to do, and know that when CNN is gone, God will still be calling us to assist…and to pray. Lutheran World Federation World Service has been in Haiti from the beginning to assist with the recovery. They are helping to or-chestrate the relief efforts and are working with a large network of organizations to bring aid to the people of Haiti. The ELCA Disas-ter Response partners with LWF, and thus 100 % of donations given to ELCA Disaster Response go directly to the relief effort and the Haitian people. This is the first call to action, to give finan-cially what we can to assist these efforts and to pray for the relief workers and the world leaders in responding to this crisis. The next step will be long term rebuilding. The ELCA has voted to officially enter into a partner relationship with Eglise Lutherienne d’Haiti as companions. This means that the ELCA Global Mission and our Florida Bahamas Synod will be working together, hand in hand with the congregations of the Lutheran Church of Haiti. We are united in our commitment to assist the people of Haiti and the Lutheran Churches of Haiti for the long term. Together we will accompany each other in the long journey before us of working with our Haitian brothers and sisters to spread the gospel and re-spond to God’s call to help those in need. This accompaniment will take many forms depending on how God calls us to share our gifts and talents. We can financially support Eglise Lutherienne d’Haiti through our synod Haiti committee who sets goals together with the Haitian people and work together to make those goals a reality. There will be opportunities to go on mission trips to Haiti to work together with the Haitian people on the reconstruction. And there will continue to be opportunity to ad-vocate for the people of Haiti, to keep the recovery in the minds of God’s people and not let us abandon them when the media atten-tion is gone. We all have a role in the recovery of Haiti. God has a plan. We need to open our ears and hearts and listen to Him. Caloosa Conference Together in Mission… for Haiti We now have 128 Virtual Bricks for Haiti! In the friendly compe-tition between the WELCA and Youth of our congregation the totals stand at WELCA 66 bricks v. Youth 37 bricks. Thank you all so much, and keep up the good work! By the Grace of God we will help Haiti recover and renew. Donation envelopes can be found in the entry way near our "Virtual" Lego church. Together in Mission, we can do God’s Work, with our hands.
Life Line Screening’s Mobile Health Testing Units Are Coming Where: Christ Lutheran Church When: Saturday, April 17, 2010 Stroke and other serious problems can be avoided and treated before they become life threatening. That’s what makes Life Line Screening such a valuable service. Over 5 million Americans have already taken advantage of these important screenings and with good reason. 80% of strokes are preventable. Source: National Stroke Association 2007 Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer in the United State and a lead-ing cause of permanent disability. The National Stroke Association states that your risk of stroke doubles each decade after age 55. Un-fortunately, many significant vascular problems go undetected until it is too late. Now you have the opportunity to screen for potential strokes, aneurysms and heart disease before they become life-threatening. Stroke/Carotid Artery Screening - Heart Rhythm Screening (Atrial Fibrillation) - Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening - Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening - Life Line Screening will complete all 4 vascular screenings for only $139. Add an osteoporosis screening for only $10 more. To compliment their ultrasound screenings, Life Line Screening now offers finger-stick blood tests for Cholesterol, Glucose and Liver Enzymes You may think that your physician would order these screenings if they were necessary. However, insurance companies typically will not pay for screenings unless there are symptoms. Unfortunately 4 out of 5 peo-ple that suffer a stroke have no apparent symptoms or warnings signs. That is why having a Life Line Screening is so important to keep you and your loved ones healthy and independent. Life Line Screening has recently introduced the Disease Prevention Scorecard—a powerful scientific tool that predicts your risk in the next 5 years of developing 6 chronic conditions such as coronary heart dis-ease, stroke, congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes and for smokers…lung cancer and COPD. Results include a personalized 10-page action plan with an explanation of your risk factors, level of disease and how to decrease your disease risks to prepare for a healthier future. Cost is $79. Pre-registration is required. Space is Limited! Call 1-800-324-1851 to schedule your appointment.
The Twenty Third Annual Assembly of the Florida-Bahamas Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will meet April 30 - May 2 at the Wyndham Orlando Resort, Orlando, FL. Those attending from Christ Lutheran Church as Voting Mem-bers are Milo Bailey, Kay Doverspike, Jeff Fairfax (Youth), Dee Fehlberg, Kim Heindl, AiM, and Pr. Gary LaCroix.
CLC Treasurer Report January and February, 2010 We are now into our first couple months of our new annual budget. We have scheduled a meeting on April 11th in the church at 10:20 AM to review the new 2010 budget. This will better align our financial year with the stewardship program and also allow us to vote on the budget at a time we have a better representation of the total membership. The current numbers for January and February are shown below: Jan/Feb Actual Income Jan/Feb Actual Expenses Difference (Net) $113,658.64 $94,034.95 $19,623.69
As you can see our expenses are less than the total income. On the next report we will be measuring the planned budgeted income versus the budgeted expenses. This gives us a view of our total needs and how well we are meeting those needs. Since we have not approved a budget for 2010 until we have our congregational meeting April 11th we do not have those numbers. I will show how we compare on our year to date budget in the next report. We have the new software installed and running that will give more accurate individual statements and allow for easier compilation of re-ports and special studies. You will see the first individual reports in April. We are now completing our "Stories to Tell and Gifts to Share" stewardship program and don’t have the final results of that program.
